The group heard about how the triage system for NHS 111 has been set up and how it works. We learned that there are 13 different providers of NHS 111 across the country. IC24 covers Kent, Essex, Norfolk and parts of Sussex and Gloucestershire. Dealt with 18.6 million calls in 2023/24. there were several questions and examples of both bad and good contacts with the service. Staff are well trained and supervised.
BMC Updates
- DNA numbers for nursing staff continue to be very high. Further information needs to be looked at, such as what % are these numbers of overall appointments etc. all waiting times for DR, ACP appts etc were down. Pharmacy appts were taking longer but this was due to the loss of Damian and the ensuing impact on staff.
- Triage – review was due the following week. Receptionists still using the templates but patients are generally all being booked into appointments anyway.
Autumn Flu /Covid Clinics
- Dates have been agreed. The 5th and 12th October will be joint Flu and Covid clinics. The 19th October will be Flu only. We will be seeking Volunteers to support these clinics.
PPG Updates
- Dementia/LTC day
- The day (27 July) went really well and the Disability Awareness Birchington group will be taking actions using info gathered
- PRG feedback – postponed until 8/10
- QA meeting feedback – the ongoing issues with the lift continue. SP/BP have written to the landlords and IH re this. Waiting for further info.
- The ramp at the back door will be fixed for clinics, by screwing into doorstep.
- Main risks for the practice reman financial and space/ size of building.
- Only 1 complaint ongoing relating to GP attitude
- All visitors must sign in to the practice.
Issues raised by members
- a query was raised re complaints procedure and what should happen. LS replied that depends on the content of the complaint. Should be made by email or letter to Lucy. The complainant should receive a telephone call within 3 days (working days). If that does not resolve the issue the complainant should hear in 28 days. If, for any reason there is a delay in responding then the complainant should receive a letter of notification.
- If complainant is not satisfied they can contact the south east hub, the advocacy people or the health ombudsman. Thy can contact the CQC but that organisation cannot investigate complaints but may review processes.
AOB and Meetings Management

- A member wanted to share their thanks to the staff as they were put on the cancer pathway earlier in the year and were very pleased at the speed everything happened. They reported that they are now ok.
- A query about xray results – if all ok you don’t get told anything.
- A reminder about 14 November earlier start time (2.30pm)
